Census Gotchas

• 1841 census of England: The enumerator was supposed to round the ages of those older than 15 down to a multiple of 5 (but some didn’t).
• 1841 census of Scotland: The enumerator was supposed to round the ages of those older than 15 down to a multiple of 5 (but some didn’t).
• 1890 Federal census of USA: Majority of the records were lost in a fire in 1921.
• Pre-1901 census of Ireland: Majority of the records were destroyed by the government or lost in the 1922 fire at the Public Records Office in Dublin.
