All it takes is a clue...Coward or Cowaret?

Due to the advances of technology, indexing, and digitization, many times in our genealogy research so many of the documents and records just seem to materialized. However, it takes a clue to two for the computers to do some of the work for us. This is one such case.

I was watching the Ancestry Extra webinar posted on April 28, 2020 on the Ancestry Facebook page about using the Canadian newspapers available on Newspapers.com presented by Anne Gillespie Mitchell . Since I have a subscription that includes the Publishers Extras I figured I do a quick check on one of my ancestors, Kathleen Adeline Martin, my 1st cousin 3x removed, and the spouse of Alex Coward. She died on 26 Oct 1858 and was buried in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, Canada. I already had a number of records concerning her travels between Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada and Ketchikan, Territory of Alaska, USA.

Find a Grave, database and images (https://www.findagrave.com : accessed 29 April 2020), memorial page for Kathleen Adeline Martin Coward (11 Jul 1887–26 Oct 1958), Find a Grave Memorial no. 52022423, citing Pioneer Cemetery, Whitehorse, Yukon Census Division, Yukon, Canada ; Maintained by Velvet Withers (contributor 49050024).

I wondered if I could find an obituary and learn where she died.

It was fortunate that one of the newspapers that has been digitized and is part of the Publisher Extra collections is the Whitehorse Daily Star. Just by typing in her preferred married surname of "Cowaret" the article about her death and funeral was the first to appear in a list of 24 matches in that newspaper.
"Mrs. Alexander Cowaret Dies Here," The Whitehorse Star, 30 Oct 1958, p. 9, col. 6; digital images, Newspapers (www.newspapers.com : accessed 28 Apr 2020).
"Mrs. Alexander Cowaret Dies Here," The Whitehorse Star, 30 Oct 1958, p. 9, col. 6; digital images, Newspapers (www.newspapers.com : accessed 28 Apr 2020).
I hope you noticed that the memorial for Kathleen has her surname as "Coward" and the newspaper article recorded her surname as "Cowaret". The story goes is that after she married Alex Coward in 1929 she did not like the name so, the couple was known as Mrs. Cowaret and Mr. Coward1.

From this article it would seem that she died at home, probably in Minto. But this is where other notices we might overlook can provide additional details. The"Notice To Creditors And Claimants Estate" provided more details almost six months after her death.
"Notice To Creditors And Claimants Estate," The Whitehorse Star, 16 Apr 1959, p. 6, col.46; digital images, Newspapers (www.newspapers.com : accessed 28 Apr 2020).
"Notice To Creditors And Claimants Estate," The Whitehorse Star, 16 Apr 1959, p. 6, col.46; digital images, Newspapers (www.newspapers.com : accessed 28 Apr 2020).
Here we learned that she died in the Whitehorse General Hospital and not at home and the home is possibly closer to McCabe Creek and not Minto (8 km separation). We also have confirmation of the preferences of the surnames for Kathleen and her spouse Alex.

What about her husband, Alex Coward? I had nothing about him in my genealogy database other than a name. Again, the newspaper in Whitehorse gave me a starting point. In the 5 Nov 1959 edition of The Whitehorse Star I came across this article titled "For Hawaii" where it is reported that:
"Hawaii looks like a good place to spend the winder after putting in more than 40 years in the Yukon, so that's where Alex Coward went last week...He said he definitely would not come back to the Yukon..."
The article includes little details such as:
  • born in 1885 in Cairo, Illinois, USA
  • came to the Yukon on 13 Aug 1913 to trap
  • Alex and his late wife resided in Selkirk until 1952
  • his wife died 26 Oct 1958
So I now had a few more clues about Alex.

I entered those details into my cousin-bait tree on Ancestry. Almost immediately I had 8 possible hints. Several of those hints didn't make sense but one of the hints was from the "Newspapers.com Obituary Index, 1800s-current" collection that links to Newspapers.com. Could this be him?

"Windsor District Obituaries - Alexander Coward," The Windsor Star, 7 Oct 1961, p. 12, col. 3; digital images, Newspapers (www.newspapers.com : accessed 29 Apr 2020).
"Windsor District Obituaries - Alexander Coward," The Windsor Star, 7 Oct 1961, p. 12, col. 3; digital images, Newspapers (www.newspapers.com : accessed 29 Apr 2020).
Definitely looks like him. He passed away in Windsor, Ontario, Canada on 6 Oct 1961. It looks like I will have a bit of work to do finding and recording some of the details of his life.

As for Coward or Cowaret, it is quite simple. Kathleen went by Cowaret and Alex went by the surname of Coward.

The Family of Thomas Wells and Mary Foley

For the past while I've been spending my time helping others in their genealogy and family history research, whether on Facebook or at the Ottawa Public Library Local History & Genealogy Drop-In Club (now a virtual weekly event due to COVID-19). However, I figure I might actually take some time to apply some of the things I've written about in this blog.

I decided I'd start work on the line of Thomas Wells, and Mary Foley, my 3rd great grandparents. So what do I know about Thomas and Mary's family based on my earlier research from 2013?

Thomas Wells

  • born between 1814 and 1831 in Ireland1,2,3,4,5,6
  • immigrated to Canada about 1849
  • by 4 April 1881 he is a widower and resides in Manitoba3
  • died 9 May 1907 due to bronchitis in St. Boniface, Manitoba, Canada6,7
  • buried in Teulon, Manitoba, Canada6,7

Mary Foley

  • born about 1835 in Upper Canada1,2
  • died before 4 April 18813

Thomas and Mary

  • married about 18551
  • children:
    • James (about 1855-?)1
    • Eliza Ann (1856-1947)1
    • Margaret Jane (about 1858-?)1
    • unknown male (about 1859-before 2 Apr 1871)2
    • Isabella (about 1862-?)2
    • Ellen (about 1863-?)2
    • Thomas, Jr. (about 1865-?)2
    • John Wellington (about 1867-?)2
    • William Henry Wells (about 1869-?)2
As you can see, there are a lot of gaps and uncertainties. So where am I going to start?

How about putting Thomas on the ground? I know from the 1861 census of Canada West that he is in Blanshard Township, Perth County, Canada West1. But where in that township? For that I need to go back to my post A Challenge: 1861 Census of Canada - Agricultural Schedule and follow my own instructions. About 20 minutes later I found him listed:

1861 census of Canada West, Perth County, Township of Blanshard, p 84 - Agricultural schedule - extract for Thomas Wells.
1861 census of Canada West, Perth County, Township of Blanshard, p 84 - Agricultural schedule - extract for Thomas Wells.
There is he is found residing at Concession WB Lot p19. I have no idea what that meant but it is a start.

Next it was over to Ontario Land Registry Access site. For assistance in researching that site I made use of Cindi's My Moynahan Genealogy Blog and her excellent series of posts, especially Part II: OnLand Records: Historical Books: Abstract / Parcel Register Book to find the right book.

While browsing the Historical Abstract/Parcel Register book list for Blanshard in Perth County I came across West Boundary; Concession. I think the mystery of WB is answered. So I delved into that digitized set of records. A few minutes of flipping through the pages I came to Lot 19.

Onland Abstract/Parcel Register Book - Perth (44), Blanshard Township, Book 176, image 99 - West Boundary, Lot 19 - extract: Canada Company to Thomas Wells.
Onland Abstract/Parcel Register Book - Perth (44), Blanshard Township, Book 176, image 99 - West Boundary, Lot 19 - extract: Canada Company to Thomas Wells.

It seems that Thomas received 100 acres of land from the Canada Company on 27 Jan 1859. On 2 March 1859 Thomas sold 50 acres of that land to William Quinn. I think that explains the p19. He is living on part of lot 19 in 1861.

Can I find additional details about the land transfer from the Canada Company to Thomas?

On FamilySearch I came across "Land records of Perth County, 1847-1953" in their catalogue. Even better, I can view the digitized microfilm images from home. Unfortunately the index for Blanshard township only starts around 1866 but Thomas received the land in 1859. Not a problem, just go to the "Blanshard Township, v. C (1274-2103) 1859-1862" microfilm and hope that there is an index...and there is! From the index I learned that instrument number 1338 concerned the transaction between the Canada Company and Thomas Wells.

FHL 0169829, image 67 - Grant and Release from Canada Company to Thomas Wells, Perth County, Blanchard Township, No. 1338.
FHL 0169829, image 67 - Grant and Release from Canada Company to Thomas Wells, Perth County, Blanchard Township, No. 1338.
I found that Thomas paid 100 pounds, 16 shillings, and 3 pence for the 100 acres. On the next page it recorded that he sold the 50 acres for 206 pounds and 5 shillings. Not a bad bit of profit for Thomas and his wife Mary.

On 20 September 1871 he sells his land to William Arksey for $1,255.62. At that time, Mary, Thomas' wife, is still alive.

In his will8 written on 23 April 1906, Thomas mentions land in Manitoba described as follows:
"North East Quarter of Section Four, Township Eighteen Range Three, West of the first principal Meridian in the Province of Manitoba"
I found the entry for that property in the Land Grants of Western Canada, 1870-1930 database on the Library and Archives Canada web site. Unfortunately, the microfilm with the image of the grant is one that hasn't been digitized. Following the instructions on the LAC site I've submitted a request to have the reel digitized and put on the Héritage site.

Where to next?

I have several questions I want answered:
  • Who are the parents of Thomas and the parents of Mary?
    • Naming patterns of the children might help here
  • Can I locate a better approximation for the birth year for Thomas?
    • Depending on the records examined it is currently a wide range.
    • 1871 and 1881 censuses seem to agree it is about 1821
    • His death registration puts it about 1823
    • 1861, 1891, and 1901 are the outliers (both high and low)
  • When did Mary die?
    • She was alive when the land was sold in September 1871 but dead by the 1881 census
  • Can I find Thomas in the 1906 census of the Prairie Provinces of Canada?
  • What happened to the children of Thomas and Mary?

At this point, I think I will follow the various branches of Thomas' and Mary's family. I'll be checking various census enumerations, birth, marriage, and death indexes and records, along with online newspaper collections, plus whatever other documents I can think of. I already have undertaken that process for their daughter Eliza Ann, my 2nd great-grandmother. Hopefully I can fill in some of the blanks I have for this family.

Questions and Answers: Dos and don'ts

With the self-isolation happening due to COVID-19 a number of us have been working on our family trees. This also means that many have been hitting those proverbial brick walls. One way of working our ways around, over, or through these genealogical challenges is to ask for assistance from others. With social distancing in effect, a common place I see this happening on is in the various genealogy and family history groups on Facebook.

I've touched upon asking questions and giving answers on Facebook several years ago in Comments about Facebook Comments and Genealogy and Answering Facebook Genealogy Questions but I think it is time to address it once again.

Questions

When looking for assistance in your research, whether it be on Facebook, in some other online forum, or by e-mail, here are a few tips:

Only ask one question at a time

  • This can be really hard since often you are chasing a number of challenges with that family or person. Asking multiple questions in the same post can confuse possible responders since they have to untangle the information you have provided.

Be clear in your question

  • Make sure that you actually state a question in your post. Preferably the question should be the first sentence in your post.
  • Is the information that you are posting understandable? Using proper sentences and paragraphs can really add readability to your post.We are not all e.e. cummings. Upper and lower case are appreciated.

Provide some details

  • When you post your question you need to assume that whomever reads the question knows nothing about the family or person. Some of the details may include:
    • Location
    • Dates or date ranges
    • Names
  • You might be surprised how often someone asks for help researching an ancestor and they leave off the person's name in the query.
  • Tell us where you have looked or if this your first foray into family research.
  • However, don't overwhelm the reader with a ten paragraph treatise with a dump of everything you have learned to date.
  • If asking about an image or picture then make sure it is as clear as possible so that key details can be picked up. Also, respect the copyright of the owner of the image. Provide details about where you got the image so that others may, if they have access to the source, review it in situ.

Have you done your homework?

  • Part of asking a question is that you must have done some of the work first. For example, if asking about locating civil registration records have you learned about the privacy restrictions for that locale?
  • Does the question violate the rules of the group? Many online genealogy groups and forums don't allow questions about the living.

Answers

As responders we also have some guidelines we should follow:

Read all the answers posted by others

  • The question may already be answered by someone else.
  • On Facebook you can "like" a post and that can help add weight to an answer that has been already given. It also provides some feedback to the other responder that their input has been valuable.

Are you answering the question?

  • If the question is about a baptism you probably shouldn't be talking about consulting civil registration records or explaining about civil registration privacy restrictions.
  • I believe that it is perfectly acceptable that if you can't answer the question directly but have suggestions as to where the poster can look next then you should post that information.

Provide details

  • Don't just post a brief answer and leave it at that. Follow the saying:
Give a person a fish, and you'll feed them for a day. Teach a person to fish, and you've fed them for a lifetime
  • Give a brief explanation of where you found the information. If it was tricky to locate using a genealogy site's search system, give the key details of your search process.
  • Also don't just give an answer like "Check the ____ records". Make sure you add additional information such as where those records can be found. Are they online or are they located in a building somewhere? Remember, often the original poster doesn't have the knowledge or experience that you have gained over time.
  • Respect the copyright on any images that you may include in your answer. For any images that you do post from other web sites, try to include the link to the image. The original poster and other readers might not have known about that resource.
Finally, and this applies to everyone and even though it shouldn't need to be said, be polite.

Nova Scotia Parish Registers: LAC and Héritage

This past week I've been following the guidance of the various Public Health officials to stay at home and only go out for essential trips only. Due to that, and with the Library and Archives Canada building in Ottawa closed to the public where I'd normally go to review Thematic Guide 1206 to Parish Registers, I've been creating my own indexes from the various Parish Registers microfilms held by LAC and now freely made available online via the Héritage project.

I started with the Ontario Parish Registers and continued with the New Brunswick Parish Registers. Now it is Nova Scotia's turn. However, I didn't just come across Nova Scotia records in these digitized reels but also some parish records for New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Ontario are hidden within.

For those not familiar with the Héritage site, this is not a genealogy site like Ancestry, Findmypast, MyHeritage, FamilySearch, or other commonly used sites by family historians and genealogists. Instead, Héritage is probably more along the lines of a repository of digitized microfilm reels. Instead of typing in the name of a person when searching you focus on the descriptions of the material found in the catalogues. To help you out a bit in using the site please read my post "Old School" Research With a Modern Twist.

There are not all of the microfilms that Library and Archives Canada has for Nova Scotia Parish Registers. Only the C, H, and T series have been digitized and made available on Héritage. There are also the M series microfilms that are available only at LAC.

Many of the microfilms contain typed or handwritten transcriptions of the original records but there are a few volumes that have images from the original books. Even though in the index I often use B, M, D as abbreviations, remember that these are parish registers and are typically Baptisms, Marriages, and Burials. Also, my apologizes to my French speaking friend for I didn't include the accents where applicable. There are also a few "strange" microfilms in the mix that don't appear, at least at first glance, to have anything to do with parish registers and those are the shipping registers.

The indexes below are not generally found at the beginning of the digitized reels of microfilm but have been created (any typos are my fault) from reviewing the description pages at the start of the various sections or from looking at the details at the bottom of most of the pages.

New Brunswick Parish Registers: LAC and Héritage

After going through the title pages for the Ontario Parish Registers microfilms in my post Ontario Parish Registers: LAC and Héritage I felt that I should also see what the New Brunswick Parish Registers collection on Héritage had to offer since my Loyalists roots settled in that province.

http://heritage.canadiana.ca/view/oocihm.lac_mikan_115521

As you can see, there are a few microfilm reels available to us.

One thing must be highlighted about the Héritage site. This is not a site like Ancestry, Findmypast, FamilySearch, or many of the other genealogy related sites out there. These are digitized microfilms reels from the collections at Library and Archives Canada. Some of the microfilms may have been "indexed" using Optical Character Recognition or OCR technology but many have not. One of the challenges with OCR is that a human is usually not involved and, depending on the clarity of the text, certain letters will get messed up. So user be warned!

For some help and guidance in using the Héritage site, see my post "Old School" Research With a Modern Twist.

The descriptions below came from the title pages found within the digitized microfilms. I do apologize to my French readers for I didn't include the accents when I was transcribing the descriptions.

In my post Ontario Parish Registers: LAC and Héritage I referenced the Héritage site and their collection of Ontario Parish Registers on microfilm. However, with some of the questions I received about using Héritage, I find that a follow up post is necessary to clarify some things and to aid researchers in using the site.

The first thing I noticed with many of the questions is that we really are fortunate to have sites like Ancestry, FamilySearch, MyHeritage, Findmypast along with many others to aid us in our research. On those sites, due to the efforts of transcribers, often we just have to type in a name and a list of records appear. Don't get me wrong, this is a wonderful thing since, not even 20 years ago, we used to rely on indexes in books created and published by genealogy and family history societies to help us find people in the census records. But we have become spoiled.

The Héritage site isn't like that. This site is a collection of digitized microfilms that we have to wade through like we used to, and some of us still do at times, to locate the nuggets of information we seek. Sometimes we might find an index and a more detailed description of what is on the microfilm at the start of the reel but there are no guarantees.

So let's walk through using the site by way of one of the questions raised:
I went to the sites linked to your post to find an odd outlier in your list - "Roman Catholic Mission, Berlin (later Kitchener), BD 1860".

The search function seems to have failed me.

Is there any way I can find a more detailed description of this, in particular outside dates?
First of all, this is a completely reasonable question and I'm not picking on the poster. Actually, I'm glad this question was posed. The challenge faced is how the Héritage site functions. In my previous post I only gave the short descriptions from the initial index pages on the reel but not how to actually find the pages from the microfilms.

From my prior post I can see that the microfilm that contains the information from "Roman Catholic Mission, Berlin (later Kitchener), BD 1860" is C-15758. So how about we hop over to Héritage and put that microfilm reel number in to the search. One thing that I've found on this site is that to find a microfilm you get better results if you put the microfilm number in quotes like "C-15758".
Screen capture of search results for "C-15758" on Héritage.
Screen capture of search results for "C-15758" on Héritage.

Clicking on "Parish registers: Ontario : C-15758" brings us to the first image on that digitized reel.
Screen capture of the starting page for microfilm C-15758 on Héritage.
Screen capture of the starting page for microfilm C-15758 on Héritage.
Many but not of the digitized microfilms will have a start image like this. Sometimes there will be information that can aid us, other times, not really.

On the web page you can see the number of pages, 232, a View tab, which we are looking at, an About tab, and ways of moving through this digitized microfilm reel plus zooming out and in of the images.

If you click on the About tab, you will see details about the microfilm. Note, this not necessarily in depth details like a table of contents but a brief description about the microfilm.
Screen capture of the About tab for microfilm C-15758 on Héritage.
Screen capture of the About tab for microfilm C-15758 on Héritage.

For the question that was raise, "Is there any way I can find a more detailed description of this, in particular outside dates?" I had to click the arrows to navigate through the images until I happened upon image 18 where I saw:
Extract of C-15758, image 18 on Héritage detailing the information from "Roman Catholic Mission, Berlin (later Kitchener), BD 1860"
Extract of C-15758, image 18 on Héritage detailing the information from "Roman Catholic Mission, Berlin (later Kitchener), BD 1860"
Here we learn about where the information came from, Rev. Eugene Funcken, the locations, and the number of baptisms and deaths recorded.

It is important to note that not all indexes had this kind of details. It all depends on the level of effort the person that created the documents to help those that ended up using the microfilms. I really don't think they weren't expecting us genealogists and family historians to rely on their efforts so many years later.

So the question is answered but what about actually seeing the information from Rev. Eugene Funcken? That goes back to cranking the handle, or in our case, clicking the next button. We have to look at each page and hopefully find the information we are looking for before giving up, your patience will often be rewarded. With only 232 pages in total and we've already looked at 18 it really isn't too bad.

Sometimes you will see pages like this:
Extract of C-15758, image 78 on Héritage
Extract of C-15758, image 78 on Héritage

These sorts of pages will help you as you navigate through the pages. They provide a description that is often quite handy for your source citations and can also help you figure out if the next section is the one you are looking for. From the detailed index I learned that it is number 48 that I want and this section is numbers 25-54 so we are probably getting closer to the microfilmed pages we are looking for.

Finally on image 122 I see the following:
Extract of C-15758, image 122 on Héritage.
Extract of C-15758, image 122 on Héritage.
This appears to be the start of the Return of Baptisms solemnized by Rev. E. Funcken of the Roman Catholic Mission of Berlin, Waterloo County.

If you want to save the image, at least in Firefox and Chrome, right clicking on the image and selecting "Save image as" from your browser's popup window will allow you to save the image to your computer for safe keeping and later review.

Keep in mind that not all digitized reels will be as easy to navigate and find the information you are hoping to find.

Just a second...you mean to say that was easy???

It was relatively easy since there were good index pages with descriptions and the number of pages on the microfilm was fairly small. Going through 1200 pages with horrible handwriting can be really challenging but doable with time and patience (and sometimes a good drink or two!)

So don't shy away from these non-computer indexed collections that once only existed on paper and then on microfilm in archives in often far away places. Once you get the hang of using a site like Héritage or even the digitized microfilm reels found on FamilySearch your horizons will be expanded with all sorts of new records within your grasp.

Ontario Parish Registers: LAC and Héritage

As we progress in our research we often expect to find records in unexpected places. Such is the case for parish registers. Generally these books and microfilm copies are held by the parish or in a centralized archive for that religion in a specific region. There are always exceptions to that such as the Drouin collection held by Genealogy Quebec with copies available from Ancestry.

Here is another exception: the microfilms held by Library and Archives Canada. Some of these microfilms have been digitized and placed online as part of the Héritage Project.

Those that have used the digitized microfilms from the Héritage project on the Canadian Research Knowledge Network site know that it can be difficult to find the content that you are hoping to find. The challenge for any researcher using this site is that the search facility is based not necessarily on the content in the microfilms but the descriptions and associated metadata.

What do I mean by that?

How about we look at microfilm C-3030 that came from Library and Archives Canada and has been digitized and hosted on the Héritage site.
Screen capture from Héritage about page for Parish registers: Ontario : C-3030.
Screen capture from Héritage about page for Parish registers: Ontario : C-3030.
That description doesn't tell you anything except that the microfilm has parish registers from Ontario. But what parish registers and how many? And therein lies the problem.

At Library and Archives Canada there are two red binders that are finding aids to the various microfilms containing parish registers. Unfortunately, with the COVID-19 pandemic, that building is closed to us at the moment and, until Library and Archives Canada gets around to putting these very useful finding aids on-line, it can be frustrating to figure out what they have in their collection.

Even if we had access to those finding aids it is important to remember that not all microfilms have been converted to a digital medium and placed on line either on the Library and Archives Canada site or on Héritage. Generally only microfilms that start with C, H, and T have been digitized and placed on Héritage. Even then, not all of those microfilms are online yet. Additionally, a number of the parish registers at Library and Archives Canada are held on microfilms that start with "M".

Searching through the Héritage catalog for Ontario Parish Registers there are 14 reels of microfilms available for your review. However, we still have that quandary of not know what parishes are on those reels. Hopefully this list that I've compiled from reviewing these films will help you out.
